Breast Cancer Warriors: A family affair

Posted: Updated:

(KATV) - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but a mother and her two daughters are working to keep women informed all year, after all three of them beat it.

Lindsay Halebender was diagnosed with breast cancer in June - the day after her younger sister found out her breast cancer was in remission.

"I went in thinking I was ahead of the game, and I already had it," said Lindsay.

Lindsay's sister Devon first found a lump in her breast on Christmas Eve 2012 at the age of 25. It was Stage 3 - advanced breast cancer. She only checked herself because their mother, Becky, had to fight off the disease three times.

Becky said that the family saved each other: Devon checked because of her, and Lindsay checked herself because Devon.

Devon was cancer free four months after starting treatment. She and Lindsay had their double mastectomies eight days apart.

Now the women are spreading their message of hope to other young women diagnosed with breast cancer.

"They say attitude is everything, so we just try to stay up," said Lindsay. "We have a saying in our family that the glass is half full and that laughter is the best medicine so we just try even on our worst days to keep it 'glass-is-half-full' and just keep laughing."
