Governor Fallin: No State Money for Federal Programs

Posted: Updated:

Governor Mary Fallin requested this week that Oklahoma agency leaders not use any state money to temporarily fund federal programs during the ongoing government shutdown.

Fallin went on to add that they should only do so if they've been guaranteed federal reimbursement. This was after Secretary of Finance Preston Doerflinger sent a memo Tuesday.

"The state of Oklahoma doesn't have the resources to prop up federal programs with state dollars if the federal government shutdown continues. It's simple math. The money just isn't there," Fallin went on to state in a report published in the Collinsville News.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the memo urges agency heads to discontinue any federally funded programs that could result in a permanent loss of state funds.

Doerflinger's memo also urges agency leaders to notify his office of any extraordinary circumstances that would cause "undue harm to the life and safety of individuals."

"Even if the state tapped emergency resources to fund federal programs, the burn rate would be incredibly swift to the point that the state would likely exhaust all its own resources with no guarantee of ever being reimbursed. It would cause more problems than it would solve, so it's not a responsible or realistic option at this point," Fallin said in her statement.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
