Arkansas State gets $4M for humanities facility

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State University will finally be able to finish its Humanities and Social Sciences building, thanks to $17 million in bond money and an additional $4 million from the state.

Gov. Mike Beebe announced the $4 million during a Saturday ceremony at the Jonesboro campus.

The Jonesboro Sun reports the school has been working for 12 years to design and build the facility.

Trustees in September approved a bond issue that will provide $17 million, which is in addition to an earlier $17 million that came from state general improvement funds.

The four-story, 121,000-square-foot facility is to open in 2015.

Lauri Umansky, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, says every student who attends ASU will pass through the building as it serves its core mission.
