CONWAY (KATV)-- A Conway woman is arrested, after a child in her care suffers severe burns on her stomach and legs.

29-year-old Ashley Burch is still sitting in the Faulkner County Detention Center without bond.

Two different stories were initially reported by the 6-year-old victim.

A disturbing story tonight, as this little girl recovers from second degree burns from her belly button to her mid-thigh.

According to a police report, the child first told hospital staff on Monday night, that she got the burns while walking home from school, but a different story emerged once Burch left the room.

"It's shocking, but anything now a days can happen," said a neighbor living across from

"Her kids come out and play all the time, I just see her coming in and out of her car, I think it's a caregiver."

After knocking on Burch's door several times, with no answer coming from the apartment Burch shares with the victim and the child's mother.

In earlier reports, the child told hospital staff she received the burns when she was walking from school and fell into a ditch.

But once Burch left the room, the girl's story saying Burch poured hot water on her as a punishment, after accusing her of stealing her jewelry.

"People who abuse children can be parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles, be neighbors, any number of people, it's not limited to parents," said Amy Webb, Director of Communications, Arkansas Department Human Services.

Last year alone, DHS investigated more than 35,000 cases of alleged abuse and neglect.

Officials encourage anyone who sees abuse, or suspects it to contact the state's child abuse hotline at 1-800-482-5964.

Burch is being held without bond.

She's facing felony counts for first degree domestic batter and endangering the welfare of a minor.
