Oklahoma State linebacker Shaun Lewis is the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week and Cowboy kicker Ben Grogan is the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week on the heels of their performances in the Cowboys’ win over Kansas State, the conference office announced today.
In addition to snuffing out K-State’s comeback hopes with an interception late in the fourth quarter, Lewis forced a fumble that was scooped up by the Cowboys, recovered a different fumble, led the team with eight tackles and bagged a tackle for loss in OSU’s dramatic 33-29 win.
It’s the second time in Lewis’s career that he is the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. He was previously honored after the Cowboys’ win at Missouri in 2011. He’s the second different OSU player to earn Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week this season, with fellow linebacker Caleb Lavey securing that recognition after the Cowboys’ win over Mississippi State in the season opener.
Grogan kicked four field goals in the victory – a feat made even more impressive by the fact that the game featured eight lead changes and every kick he attempted had significant implications on the outcome of the contest. Grogan’s four field goals made and 15 points scored by kicking were both OSU freshman records.
It’s the first time Grogan has earned Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week, but he is the second different Cowboy to secure that distinction this season, as Josh Stewart was honored after his efforts in the return game against Lamar.
