Ex-Alexander PD officer found not guilty of manslaughter

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDER (KATV) - A jury found a former Alexander police officer charged with manslaughter not guilty Friday.

Jurors deliberated Nancy Cummings's fate for about seven hours after closing arguments that morning. Cummings' legal team did not call a single witness in her defense.

Cummings said she saw 30-year-old Carleton Wallace of Bryant walking along Brookwood Road carrying a pistol tucked in the waistband of his pants on a Saturday afternoon last September. When she approached him, Wallace allegedly threw the gun into a wooded area near the road.

While Cummings was arresting Wallace and searching for any other weapons, she said her gun accidentally went off, killing him. Prosecutors claimed she acted recklessly.

"Ms. Cummings is thankful to the jury for their hard work and thoughtful decision," said Cummings' attorney Bill James. "Nothing can be done to eliminate the pain of Carlton Wallace's family, but Ms. Cummings deeply regrets the loss they have endured."
