Special Blytheville tax set to expire this week

Posted: Updated:

BLYTHEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A special tax approved by Blytheville voters to pay off the city's multimillion debt to the Internal Revenue Service is set to expire this week.

Voters approved the 1-cent tax in March 2012 after revelations that the city owed more than $3 million in federal and state withholding taxes and penalties for 2009 and 2010.

The 15-month tax took effect in July 2012. The Blytheville Courier News (http://bit.ly/18jMtHp ) reports that collection of the special tax ends Tuesday. After the tax expires, Blytheville patrons will pay a sales tax rate of 9.75 percent, including city, county and state taxes.
