Sully Says: 5 things from the first 5 weeks

Posted: Updated:

Five things to take from the first five weeks of the Bret Bielema era:

1. Coach B's first recruiting class is special. Alex Collins is one highly touted freshman who's lived up to the all the hype. Hunter Henry doesn't look or play like a  first year player. The same can be said for two Bielema "specials," Denver Kirkland and Dan Skipper - super sized offensive linemen who have already made their first SEC start. Then there's number 33. Former Osceola star Korliss Marshall was electric in his two touches on Saturday. Why wasn't this kid a Landers Award finalist? I screwed up.

2. They are much more creative offensively than I thought they would be. They are leading the SEC in rushing yards, but they have proven they will do whatever they have to do to move the ball, and that includes throwing to their walk-on center on a fake punt. It was a fun offense to watch on Saturday.

3. They still haven't learned how to make winning plays. They could be 5 and 0 instead of 3-2 if they made championship plays in the fourth quarter of their two losses.

4. Brandon Allen has SEC talent. One key stat to look at for any quarterback is his touchdown-interception ratio. So far this season, Brandon has thrown eight touchdown passes and only three interceptions. He leads with poise and confidence. He made a lot of big-time throws against the Aggies. He will face his toughest test yet on Saturday at Florida. Much has been made of the Gators' inconsistent offense, but their defense is ranked among the country's best. This will be the first good defense the Hogs have faced.

5. They are a long way from having a good defense; just ask defensive coordinator Chris Ash. The back seven has struggled in coverage and tackling. They don't seem to have the young playmakers on defense that they have on the offensive side of the ball.
