Jonesboro, Jacksonville police awarded COPS grants

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Jonesboro and Jacksonville police departments are each being awarded a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services - or COPS - program.

U.S. Attorney Chris Thyer and the Justice Department announced the grants Friday.

Jonesboro police will receive $500,000 and Jacksonville police are being awarded $118,975.

Thyer says the COPS program provides for salary and benefits for additional officers for three years. He says the grants are based on monetary needs, local crime rates and the police department's community policing plans.
