Health Department Works to Inspect Fair Food Vendors

Posted: Updated:

Every year, health inspectors from the Tulsa Health Department go through a lengthy process to make sure all of the food at the Tulsa State Fair is safe to eat.

From cotton candy, to hot fudge sundaes, to jumbo turkey legs, the food is a staple of the fair season and with so many choices at every turn, it is easy to get overwhelmed. It is also easy to forget about the food safety at these roving food vendors.

But, that is where inspectors with the Tulsa Health Department come in. Just as every ride is inspected before opening to the crowds, so are the food vendors. Every 2 to 3 days, for the entire time the fair is in town, inspectors check sanitation conditions at all food vendors along the midway.

As the health department's biggest event of the year, it takes around 25 health inspectors to make sure all of those vendors are following guidelines. Kendra Wise with the Tulsa Health Department says, it is a major undertaking. "We have a lot of food establishments to inspect in a very short amount of time. Of course, it's a very high pressure situation, so we get really anxious. We want everyone to be open when the fair opens and, so, it's just a lot of pressure to get everyone open," she said.

KTUL spoke with vendors who said, they have a strict process every year to make sure they meet those requirements.
