How Authorities Try to Keep Sex Offenders from Working the Fair

Posted: Updated:

A ride operator at the Oklahoma State Fair was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender. So are fair employees properly checked out before they come to each city?

The rides are going up and the food vendors are getting ready. The same company is providing the rides for the Tulsa State Fair that provided the rides in Oklahoma City. Wade Shows Inc. told Tulsa's Channel 8, they do require several checks on all their employees including a criminal background check.

The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office does all the law enforcement for the fair and does make sure these companies are doing checks because they know who they are looking for during the fair.

"We have those pictures posted in the trailer. We know who we are looking for. We have the top ten most wanted that we are looking for, we have sex offenders that we are watching for," Tulsa County Sheriff's Major Shannon Clark said.

At any given time with all the different divisions they use at the fair they have about 100 deputies out there.

"We do a lot of research before any fair begins. We contact all the other fairs across the country to see if there were any trends that were going on, if there were any movements going on, protests, or anything that we should be aware of," Clark said.

Clark said they also have cameras around the fair and in the kids area to watch anyone that is coming and going. The Expo Square hires people for security, taking tickets, and other jobs around the fair. They also require background checks to work at the fair.
