High School Heroes Week 4: Bishop England's Nick Shiver

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Defending state champs Bishop England had a rough start to the year with losses to West Ashley and Hanahan, but they got their first win last week thanks in part to one guy doing big things on the field.

Nick Shiver has been stellar on the field, but he's doing even bigger things in life, making him this week's High School Hero.

Football is a game of statistics. Numbers often tell the worth of a player, but the two most important numbers for Shiver will never be seen on a box score.

"He has a GPA of 4.3 and a 40-(yard dash) time of 4.4. Pretty cool when those numbers are near the same. He does it all. He's a big brother to little brothers and leader on the field," said John Cantey.

Shiver is a guy entrenched in his team and enthralled with his school.

"It's huge. We say we bleed green. My grandpa played here. My older brother played here. My younger brother is on the team. Another brother will play," said Shiver.

Growing up, Shiver knew this is where he would end up. Already with two state titled under his belt, he was the catalyst for last week's win.

"I came out freshman year and went 5-5. I was able to be on varsity. In my sophomore and junior years, all I did was win. This year, it's what I expected," he said.

But for Shiver, winning on the field is one thing, but the main victory for him is the acceptance letter he's hoping for from West Point.

"I like everything about it, the leadership. It can make a better person. I'm not sure what I want to do, maybe ground infantry. Afterwards, I'd like to be a coach," he said.

No doubt, there are big things ahead for this Bishop.

"For now, it's good to be back on the right foot. There were two rough games to start with, but good to be back on winning ways," Shiver said.
