School district seeks stay in desegregation case

Posted:

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - A school district wants a federal judge to halt legal proceedings on the state of Arkansas' request to end desegregation payments to three Little Rock-area school districts.

The case is set for trial in December, but the Little Rock School District filed paperwork Monday asking a judge to stay the legal proceedings on the state's request.

A judge already rejected one request to delay the trial this month.

The district said in Monday's court filing that the judge should issue a stay because of a pending appeal about charter schools.

Arkansas last year asked to be released from the desegregation settlement agreement with the Little Rock, North Little Rock and Pulaski County Special school districts. The state has paid the schools more than $1 billion since 1989 under the agreement.
