Girl who survived rare infection to help at game

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A 12-year-old Arkansas girl who survived a rare and often fatal infection caused by a brain-eating amoeba is slated to help out with a coin toss at a football game next month.

Kali Hardig was diagnosed with a devastating infection in July.

Health officials say there were 128 such infections reported in the United States between 1962 and 2012. Before Kali, doctors could only point to one known survivor in the U.S. and another in Mexico.

Kali went home from the hospital this month, and she'll be on hand in Russellville on Oct. 12 to conduct the coin toss before Arkansas Tech plays Southern Arkansas.

Doctors believe Kali became sick after a trip to a lake. The amoeba that caused her infection is often found in warm, fresh water.
