BRADLEY COUNTY (KATV) - A forest fire Wednesday was contained Thursday morning.

The fire started southeast of Hermitage and headed to the north. As of Thursday morning, it was contained at 1,500 acres.

The Arkansas Forestry Commission had 33 workers on the ground and more than three volunteer fire departments fighting the blaze for most of the day Wednesday and into the night.

Empty air tankers were refilled with water so they could drop water on the blaze. Crews made 28 drops, dumping more than 20,000 gallons of water Wednesday alone.

Kevin Kilcrease, the Firewise Coordinator for the Arkansas Forestry Commission, told KATV that the most difficult part of fighting the blaze was the dry conditions.

"The hardest part is the dry fuel. We haven't had rain and the fuel is very dry. It makes the fire spread very fast and very easy. It makes our jobs much, much harder. And shifting winds always creates a problem," Kilcrease said.

Three homes were threatened, but by Wednesday evening were safe.

Firefighters said they had a solid line containing the fire, but it was still burning so they would continue keeping an eye on it to make sure it didn't spread.
