FORT SMITH (AP) - A former Fort Smith police officer has pleaded not guilty to sexual assault charges involving a 16-year-old girl.

The Times Record reports 31-year-old Billy Rowe Jr. entered the plea Wednesday morning. He is free on $25,000 bond.

An affidavit for Rowe's arrest says he met the girl while serving as a church camp counselor and that he had sex with her on five occasions - including once while he was on duty.

Police say an anonymous telephone tip on Sept. 10 led to the investigation. Rowe was placed on paid leave on Sept. 11 and resigned shortly before he was arrested Tuesday.
