Arkansas Democratic Party picks new chairman

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Democratic Party has elected North Little Rock businessman Vincent Insalaco as its new chairman.

The state party picked Insalaco during a committee meeting on Saturday in Springdale.

Insalaco will replace Will Bond, a former state legislator who announced in July that he was stepping down as chairman after two and a half years at the party's helm.

Insalaco's election doesn't come as much of a surprise.

Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe announced his support for Insalaco, saying he would be a strong replacement for Bond.

Bond chaired the party as Democrats suffered major setbacks in the state. Republicans won control of the state Legislature for the first time since Reconstruction in the November election and swept all 4 of the state's U.S. House seats.
