Saline County sheriff changes retirement date

Posted: Updated:

SALINE COUNTY (KATV) - Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington is not retiring after all. Friday, August 30, he announced that he planned to retire October 1st.

Sheriff Bruce Pennington plans to retire Oct. 1

Monday, three days later, he changed that to January 1, 2015.

While Sheriff Pennington did not give a reason for his retirement in his original letter, Pennington pleaded guilty last week to misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and public intoxication.

One interesting thing about all of this is that the justices can't force Sheriff Pennington to retire or resign. A Saline County Justice of the Peace explains to Channel Seven all they can do is "make it a difficult year and a half for him". There is a special quorum court meeting Tuesday at 8. Channel Seven will have a crew at the meeting.

Sheriff Pennington originally announced last week that he planned to retire October 1. Monday, he changed that to January 1, 2015.

Though he did not give a reason for his retirement in his original one sentence letter to the county judge, Pennington pleaded guilty last Monday to misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and public intoxication.

The charges stemmed from a June 29 incident when Benton officers were called to a restaurant on a report of an intoxicated person getting into the driver seat. Sheriff Pennington reportedly took a swing at the arresting officer and became belligerent.
