Beebe praises water plant, decries hypocrites

Posted:

HARRISON (AP) - Gov. Mike Beebe says he would have distributed federal stimulus money differently but that he would be a hypocrite if he stood up and complained about President Barack Obama's attempt to jump-start a sluggish economy.

Beebe was in northern Arkansas on Wednesday to dedicate the $72 million Ozark Mountain Regional Public Water Authority. Federal stimulus money helped pay for most of the project.

The governor took the time to call out critics of the stimulus, saying if they didn't like the program they shouldn't celebrate the creation of a reliable drinking source for 20,000 Arkansans.

The Harrison Daily Times reported that Beebe said he would have spent more money on roads under the stimulus plan but that the water project was a good use of funds, too.
