Companies investing, keeping Arkansas workers

Posted:

HOT SPRINGS (AP) - The state's top economic development officer says companies have been investing heavily in production facilities, which has helped to secure jobs across Arkansas.

But Arkansas Economic Development Commission Director Grant Tennille says much of the investment hasn't led to growth in new jobs.

The Sentinel-Record reports that Tennille said at a conference on Tuesday that continued investment in factories is critical for the state.

Tennille says that Arkansas typically falls into recession later than other states and tends to recover after other states start posting economic gains. He says that pattern is showing itself now.

Tennille says the state has to continue to diversify its economy. He noted that some factory upgrades have resulted in job losses as technological improvements mean fewer workers are needed.
