King's key speech celebrated at Arkansas memorial

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Hundreds of people gathered to march around the Arkansas Capitol and assess how much of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "dream" has been realized and how much remains unfulfilled.

The Wednesday ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington led speakers to draw a variety of conclusions.

Former legislator Tracy Steele of North Little Rock remarked that there was a time that black people were barred from assembling at the Capitol. State Rep. John Walker of Little Rock, a noted civil rights leader, said gains have been lost by the black community and that it needs to strive for greater opportunity.

As the 2 p.m. 50th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream" speech approached, Gov. Mike Beebe rang a bell 50 times as those in attendance cheered.
