Van Buren district upgrading locks at schools

VAN BUREN (AP) - The Van Buren School District will spend nearly $9,000 to provide greater security on its campuses.

The district's board voted Tuesday night to install magnetic locking systems at seven schools. Superintendent Merle Dickerson said two schools already have the system.

With the new doors, visitors will have be "buzzed in" by someone in the school's front office. Dickerson said that under the current system, too many people have immediate access to school hallways.

The Times Record newspaper of Fort Smith reported Wednesday that the superintendent will ask the board at a later date to consider redesigning school entrances.
