Community Rallies for Bauxite Football Coach NICU Twins

Posted: Updated:

The head coach of the Bauxite High School football team is facing the biggest challenge he's ever known. Shane and Ashley Clancy's twin boys, Cash and Turner, were born 15 weeks premature and were about the size of an iPhone.

The twins have done well the last two months, growing to just above four pounds each, but the tough little guys still need frequent blood transfusions. Their small bodies just can't make enough blood to support their systems. Ashley and Shane say, the difference made by the transfusions is amazing. The boys will be pale and lethargic, then get a transfusion, and all of a sudden, they turn a pretty pink and begin to squirm and squeal like babies should.

The problem is, there is a blood shortage in Arkansas. In addition to that, only one in 10 people can give blood to preemies. The rest of us carry a virus known as CMV, which won't affect adults or full-term children but can be deadly for the premature.

That's why the Red Cross says it's important for a lot of people to donate, a lesson Ashley learned just recently.

"In college, I gave blood once and got nauseous and sick and decided I was never doing that again. Some one else will give blood. Then I realized after having them that there was such a shortage of blood in Little Rock, in Arkansas," said Ashley.

The blood drive will take place Sunday at Northside Church of Christ in Benton from 10:30 a.m. To 5 p.m.  If you can't make it then, you can call 1-800-RED CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment to donate.
