FS District says its security guard legal

FORT SMITH (AP) - Fort Smith's schools superintendent says the recent flap over having armed school employees around students won't impact his district because the only person carrying a weapon on his campuses is a genuine police officer.

Superintendent Benny Gooden said a recent decision by the state Board of Private Investigators and Private Security Agencies to suspend security-guard licenses for school employees won't apply to his district's supervisor of safety and security.

Gooden told the Times Record newspaper that Eric Huber is an accredited police officer and can carry a gun. Huber worked with Barling police and is now works part-time at Logan County Sheriff's Office.

The state investigators board authorized some teachers and others to carry weapons, but the attorney general said the board covers only private firms, not public agencies.
