School supplies given to children of homeless, working homeless

Posted: Updated:

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Children of homeless and working homeless families were given free backpacks and other supplies Wednesday just in time for the start of school.

The gifts were made possible by 3M - a community-giving program - and the Clinton Foundation.

Georgia Mjartan said the gift will go a long way for the 75 children in the Our House program. Now the program can spend donor money on other needed supplies for their residents - and it's a big relief for parents.

"If you're a mom and you have two or three children, you are just nearly out of homelessness, you have just enough money to pay down your rent, you don't have those extra couple of dollars to buy a nice new backpack," said Mjartan.

This Saturday, the Clinton Center will feature its Head of the Class Bash. The first 1,500 students who enter the library will also receive free backpacks filled with school supplies.

Admission to the Center is free that day in honor of President Bill Clinton's 67th birthday.
