Cotter High School receives national honor

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) -  A Baxter County school is one of 12 nationwide to receive a distinguished honor - and they'll get some money because of it.

Cotter Junior-Senior High has been named a Verizon Innovative Learning School. They were presented a $50,000 grant for technology Tuesday morning at the State Capitol.

The program will train teachers on how to leverage mobile devices to help promote learning of math and science. Students will use devices to collaborate with classmates and scientists, create videos that show their understanding of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts and document scientific and mathematical worlds outside the classroom.

"It's very exciting to see a company like Verizon step up to the plate to show how much they support technology in our public schools," said Superintendent Don Sharp.

The program began last year. Cotter, a school with 300 students, is the first in the state to receive the honor.
