Arkansas man given "shock time" in Missouri double fatal

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP, KATV) - An Arkansas man will serve about four months of "shock time" in jail for a traffic accident that killed two Missouri Southern State University football players.

21-year-old Jeremy Johnson of Harrison was ordered Monday to also do 200 hours of community service after pleading guilty in June to two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

The underlying sentence was seven years for each charge, to be served concurrently. That sentence was suspended for the shock incarceration.

According to St. Louis law firm Henderson & Waterkotte, Missouri's "shock program" focuses on life skills, substance abuse education and the development of a community based home plan. It lasts for 120 days and requires that a bed date (reservation) be made with the department of corrections so that there is room for the defendant.

This program can be added as part of probation and after successful completion of the program the defendant will be released back to the public on general and specific terms as the judge sees fit. The downfall of this program is that even though it is not considered a remand to the Department of Corrections, the defendant will still be placed in the general prison population.

In December 2011, Johnson lost control of his vehicle on Interstate 44 near Sarcoxie. Two 19-year-old passengers, Diondre Johnson and Michael McCrimmons, both of Springfield, died.

The Joplin Globe reports a probable-cause statement alleged that Jeremy Johnson was intoxicated at the time of the accident. The group was returning from a Springfield nightclub.
