Ark. AG rejects gay marriage ballot measure

Posted:

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has again rejected the wording of a proposed ballot measure that would repeal the Arkansas constitution's ban on gay marriage.

McDaniel on Monday cited several problems with the proposed constitutional amendment submitted by Arkansans for Equality. The proposed amendment must be approved by the AG's office before the group can begin gathering signatures to place it on the ballot next year.

The proposal calls for the repeal of an amendment voters approved in 2004 that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

McDaniel cited several procedural irregularities and ambiguities with the wording of the measure. McDaniel rejected an earlier version of the measure on July 12, saying it could mislead voters into believing the amendment would automatically legalize gay marriage.
