Tax-Free Weekend Back to School Savings

Posted: Updated:

If you've been holding out for school clothes, this may be your weekend. The sales tax holiday begins this Friday and gives you a chance to buy school clothes with no sales tax.

With about 3 weeks left until school, many families will wait until this weekend to save sales tax dollars.

Academy Sports and Outdoors expects to see a Christmas in August crowd, parents pushing carts, trying to find the right uniforms.

You can buy any back to school clothing item, with no sales tax. Athletic gear, like padded pants for football, or specific sports items are not exempt. Undergarments and clothing are.

The average family will spend about $600 on back to school items. If you shop this weekend, you could save close to $60.

Academy is stocked and ready to go. In fact some families are already shopping, just to get it done. Others are window shopping, making plans to come back Friday.

"They try to make sure we are in stock which we are. We have all of the sizes in stock just in time for tax free so they do come preview," said Kim Geihsler, of Academy Sports.

Remember there are some things that simply won't work. The items have to be less than a hundred dollars. You can buy tennis shoes, but you cannot  buy cleats for football. Also backpacks are not tax exempt, but stores may have special promotions, to encourage your shopping.

The sales tax holiday begins Friday at midnight and runs through Sunday at midnight, this coming weekend.
