Tulsa Native and Influential Musician, JJ Cale Dies

Tulsa, Oklahoma -

Tulsa-native musician JJ Cale died after suffering a heart attack in California, Friday, July 26.

According to JJ Cale's website, the influential singer and songwriter passed away at 8 p.m. at the Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. Cale was 74-years-old.

Cale was born in Oklahoma City, but started playing the guitar in Tulsa clubs in the 1950s.

According to a post on Eric Clapton's Facebook, JJ played in a variety of bands including one with Oklahoma musician Leon Russell.

Cale is credited in the post as "one of the innovators of the 'Tulsa Sound.'"

In an interview cited in the post Cale said, "I don't think there is a Tulsa sound as such. It's just individuals...In western Oklahoma you've got a lot of country music. Then in eastern Oklahoma, it's closer to the Mississippi and you've got more blues musicians. In Tulsa we got influenced by both and there's some jazz in there too. So I guess that's what made my sound."

Clapton recorded several of Cales' songs including, "After Midnight", "I'll Make Love to You Anytime", "Travelin' Light", "Angel", and "Cocaine."

Dwight Twilley, a fellow Tulsa musician and owner of Big Oak Records said in a statement to KTUL.com, "Unfortunately, I didn't know Mr. Cale very well, but his passing is a great loss to Tulsa and to the music industry. It's a huge loss."

There have been no immediate plans made for a memorial service at this time.

Cale's management company stated that no donations are necessary, "...but he was a great lover of animals so, if you like, donations can be made to your favorite local animal shelter."
