Children injured by falling televisions

Posted: Updated:

The number of children being hurt by falling televisions is on the rise, according to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

The study found that more than 12,000 children were hurt by falling televisions in 2011. That is up 126% from 1990.

Most of the children who went to the hospital with injuries relating to falling televisions were five years old and younger.

"Over half the people in America have more than three TVs in their homes", says Dr. Michael Macknin of the Cleveland Clinic. "So they may have their flat-screen mounted properly, but then their old cathode-ray TV they don't have any place to put it, they throw it onto a dresser, the child climbs up the dresser and the television and the dresser can fall on top of them."

Researchers say anchoring your TV can prevent it from falling on your child.
