Electric Coops of Arkansas inks wind energy deal

LITTLE ROCK - The Arkansas Electric Cooperative Corporation (AECC) has inked a long-term deal to buy 150 megawatts of wind energy.

"The additional 150 megawatts of low-cost wind energy provides AECC with a hedge against fluctuating natural gas energy prices," said Duane Highley, president and chief executive officer of AECC.

The energy will come from the Origin Wind Energy Project in Oklahoma's Murray and Carter counties.

The additional 150 megawatts will bring AECC's total wind energy generation up to 201 megawatts.

The Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas comprise 17 electric distribution cooperatives, providing electricity to more than 500,000 members in Arkansas and surrounding states.
