Archeologists to dig at Fort Smith historic site

FORT SMITH (AP) - A group of National Park Service archeologists is beginning an exploratory dig on the grounds of the Fort Smith National Historic Site.

The 2-day project, which begins Tuesday, will focus on a section of land near the site's commissary building where sidewalk construction is proposed. The archeologists from the Midwest Archeological Center in Lincoln, Neb., will be looking at what's below the ground before construction begins on the sidewalk.

The commissary is Fort Smith's oldest standing structure and was built between 1838 and 1839.

The historic site highlights the events from the establishment of the first Fort Smith in 1817 to the final days of Judge Isaac C. Parker's jurisdiction over Indian Territory in 1896.
