Police: Mom Comes Forward After Baby Found Wandering N. Tulsa Streets

A woman has come forward to claim the baby found wandering around a North Tulsa neighborhood Monday evening.

Tulsa Police say the baby girl is 19 months old and child crisis detectives are currently investigating the case. 

According to Officer Leland Ashley, the mother contacted police around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday from the area of 8900 E. 33rd Place and told them she had left the child with a babysitter Monday evening and discovered she was missing when she saw the news.

Police are now working to verify the mother's story.

Detectives are interviewing people at a home where the child's uncle and his girlfriend were reportedly babysitting, several doors down from where the baby was discovered.

The baby was found when a woman called 911 and said she found the child wandering in front of her home around 600 East 55th Place North at 11:30 p.m. Monday night.

According to police, she took the child inside, bathed and fed her, then took a photo of her and tried to canvas the neighborhood with it for the next two hours, but no one recognized the little girl.

Around 1:35 a.m, the woman called TPD and they took her to the Laura Dester Shelter.  

Officials said the baby is happy and that there are no visible signs of abuse.

The child will remain in DHS custody as authorities continue to investigate, police said.
