Organizers need millions more for Marshals Museum

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Organizers need to raise millions of dollars before breaking ground on the U.S. Marshals Museum scheduled to open in 2016 on the banks of the Arkansas River in Fort Smith.

Museum president and CEO Jim Dunn says organizers likely need more than $30 million.

He says organizers have raised close to $12 million so far. However, He says the figure doesn't include proceeds from the sale of a commemorative coin, which could produce up to $5 million. Dunn says tax credits could chip in as much as $10 million.

Workers are expected to break ground on the $50 million museum in September 2014. Construction is expected to take about a year and a half.

The museum is to honor U.S. Marshals who patrolled the Indian territory that is now Oklahoma.
