Beetle study needed at Barling mall site

BARLING (AP) - Construction of a 70-store mall planned near Fort Smith has to wait until wildlife officials determine whether an endangered beetle already lives at the site.

Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority director Ivy Owen said Thursday the agency must receive clearance from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, which will look for the beetle at the 90 acres at Barling.

The Southwest Times Record reports that burying beetles were added to the endangered species list in 1989.

The parcel for the mall sold last month for $2.2 million to a Hot Springs group.

Officials say an entomologist will need about a week to set traps and check them for the large, orange and black beetles. If the beetles are at the site, they'll have to be relocated.
