FAYETTEVILLE (AP) - Arkansas State defensive tackle Ryan Carrethers and Arkansas defensive end Chris Smith have been named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award, which honors the country's top defensive player.
Carrethers finished the 2012 season for the Red Wolves with a career-best 68 tackles. He averaged 5.2 tackles per game. Smith started all 12 games in 2012 for the Razorbacks and recorded 52 tackles, 9.5 sacks and 12 quarterback hurries.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced Oct. 29 and three finalists will be named Nov. 25. The winner of the award will be announced Dec. 12 along with the winner of the Maxwell Award, which honors college football's best player.
Last year, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o won both awards.
