Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington answers questions following weekend citations

Posted: Updated:

Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington apologized in a 2 p.m. Monday news conference for being cited for drinking in public and refusing arrest, following an incident at Denton's Trot Line restaurant on Saturday night.

Benton Police responded to calls that a man was seen intoxicated, getting into his car Saturday, and when they arrived they found Sheriff Pennington "appearing to be intoxicated".

Pennington says he was not preparing to drive away from the restaurant, but was rather texting his nephew to come pick him up.

In the news conference, Pennington said he would not resign his position, but apologized at least four times for his actions, and said, "I'm human, I made a mistake, and it will not happen again".   "I broke a rule, and I will pay a ticket".

Pennington says he has worked in law enforcement for 40 years, including 24 years at the Arkansas State Police.

When asked why he was released to a relative, and not held following the incident, Penning responded that at no time did he ask for preferential treatment.
