"Take It To The Streets" To Cut Down On Crime

Posted: Updated:

A non-profit organization is "Taking it to the Streets" to cut down on crime.

The W.L. Hutcherson YMCA in North Tulsa hosted a big event Saturday afternoon.

Live music, face painting, food and other activities gave kids somewhere to go off the streets and build their character.

The goal is to keep the kids occupied, especially while they're still young.

Mary Riggins with the YMCA was inspired to start the event 11 years ago when she saw men going through a trash can.

"They closed down the parks and stuff in North Tulsa, so we have to figure out a non-conventional way to make sure our kids have something to do.  If we keep them busy, we keep them out of other people's houses."

The YMCA puts on the event every year.
