Discussions continue for a 21-story bronze statue that could possibly be built near Sand Springs and bring new increased tourism.

At its regularly schedule Monday meeting, the Sand Spring City Council will consider funding a $48,500 engineering feasibility study in support of The American, a 21-story bronze statue, backers want to build near the city.

City Manager Rocky Rogers said city officials are “generally favorable” to plans to build the statue of an American Indian.

“As a tourist attraction it would have a tremendous economic impact on the city,” Rogers said.

KTUL's community newspaper partner the Sand Springs Leader reported that Rogers said the city would be willing to support infrastructure construction to the site such as roads and utilities, “depending on the engineering study results and council approval.”

Mayor Mike Burdge earlier said the site would would be in Osage County, but within the city's fenceline. And Ron Weese, a Sand Springs Home trustee, confirmed that the trust has “verbally agreed in principle” to donate 40 acres as a site.

Weese also said the undeveloped, wooded site is about three miles north of Sand Springs “just to the west” of the T-intersection where McKinley Avenue (State Highway 97) and the SH97 Bypass meet.

Rogers said those promoting the statue have secured about $12 million in backing. Cost of the statue, at one time, was estimated at $38 million.

The statue, designed Osage Indian artist Shan Gray, would be 60 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty. His sculpture depicts an Indian brave standing with his right arm extended upward as a bald eagle lands on it.

Supporters say one study indicates the statue could draw 1.5 million visitors, spending $36 million at the park and at other tourism-related businesses in area.
