Ark. doctors expect more demand with new law

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Health care professionals in Arkansas say they fear there won't be enough primary care professionals to meet demand next year as newly insured residents are covered under the federal health care law.

Arkansas Hospital Association executive vice president Paul Cunningham says that as the demand for services increases - there will be more demand on health professionals to provide services.

Health officials say much of Arkansas already has a shortage of primary health care professionals and that the shortage is drastic in southeastern and southwestern parts of the state.

Insurance companies plan to sell policies to more than 500,000 Arkansans through an online marketplace created under the federal health care. Arkansas is 1 of several states using a partnership model between the state and federal government for running its health insurance exchange.
