LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Arkansas' unemployment rate rose slightly in May.

The state Department of Workforce Service reported Friday that the jobless rate increased from 7.2 percent in April to 7.3 percent in May. The department said that although there were 600 more jobs in the state in May - there were 2,400 more people looking for work.

The report shows an increase of 1,900 jobs in the trade, transportation and utilities industries and an increase of 1,400 construction jobs. Those gains were offset by 2,000 fewer jobs in professional and business services and a decline of 1,700 jobs in the educational and health services fields.

The national unemployment rate also rose one-tenth of 1 percent - from 7.5 to 7.6 percent. According to Forbes, the biggest losers nationally were young job seekers, especially those who are black or Latino and young men of any ethnicity.

The so-called "real" unemployment rate, which includes those who have become so discouraged that they have simply stopped looking for work, actually ticked down one-tenth of a percentage point from 13.9 to 13.8 percent.
