Counties leery of 'Blueway' title for White River

STUTTGART (AP) - Several counties along the White River are opposing a national designation that names the White River a National Blueway.

County leaders opposed to the measure say they're worried the national designation could mean limitations for landowners and farmers. But Emily Beyer of the U.S. Department of Interior says the National Blueways System is not regulatory, nor does it affect private property rights or governmental authorities.

The Stuttgart Daily Leader reports that Arkansas County officials have approved a resolution to oppose the designation. Several other counties have done the same, including Boone, Cleveland and Lawrence counties.

The National Blueways System is part of an Obama administration effort to establish a community-driven conservation and recreation agenda. The designation recognizes the partnerships that are working to conserve the river across its watershed.
