Garland County breaks ground on new $42M jail

Posted: Updated:

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) - Work is underway on a new $42 million jail in Garland County.

Officials gathered Thursday to break ground on the new Garland County Detention Center, located on Albert Pike Road in Hot Springs. The new facility will be paid for by a sales tax increase approved by Garland County voters in 2011.

The Sentinel-Record reports (http://bit.ly/13Lcuvm ) the new jail will have more than 156,000 square feet, and officials say that should ease overcrowding problems that plague the current detention center.

County Judge Rick Davis says the new jail should be complete by the end of next year.

Sheriff Larry Sanders says a detention center has been needed for a long time. He says the jail has been overcrowded since he was elected sheriff in 2005.
