Day Center Builds Permanent Supportive Housing for Homeless

Posted: Updated:

The Day Center for the Homeless helped eleven people move into its new supportive housing complex Wednesday.

The Hudson Villa Apartments are located at 727 S. Hudson Avenue. It can hold 60 residents. The Day Center built the facility to combat chronic homelessness. People without homes can apply for the apartments and the Day Center helps them transition, sometimes meaning it helps with rent.

Executive Director Sandra Lewis said the Day Center is continuing to "help them get benefits, help them get job skills, so that they can begin to pay rent."

Channel 8 followed Armon Prince, a man moving into the apartments. Prince said he lost his job two years ago and struggled with homelessness during that time. His case manager helped him acquire one of the spaces.

"It's helped me miraculously," said Prince of the Day Center. He dressed in a suit for the occasion. The Day Center will help him with rent while he files for disability assistance.

Hudson Villas cost $5.2 million to build. Lewis said the money came from private donations and a grant with HUD. She said the facility is opening debt-free.

Lewis said prospective residents must apply for the apartments. She said some residents have jobs and are paying their own rent. Also, she said some veterans will likely move in.
