Restaurant owner posts sign welcoming firearms

NORTH LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - A local restaurant owner is causing quite a stir with a small sign that welcomes gun owners.

The sign is posted on the front doors of two sandwich shops and it invites gun owners to come in if they have a permit. But the owner says he had to put up the sign up for reasons that are far from political.

"This is simply an accommodation for people that are legally licensed to carry," said Jim Magers, owner of Schlotzsky's Deli.

He says it's far from a political message, it's a professional one to legal gun owners about safety.

"They don't have to think about leaving their guns in the car where it's less secure and it might become a risk to the public," said Magers.

But what ever the intention may be, it's a message that is sure to get people on both sides of the issue fired up.

"I don't think they should have firearms in their eatery like that," said Ray Williams.

But others wish more people would do the same.

"I think it's great!" said Don Hill, owner of Don's Weaponry in North Little Rock. "I think it's wonderful. I wish every store had a sign like that."

And for some, signs like these determine whether or not a store will get business.

"I went to buy a car the other day it said no firearms allowed," said Hill. "I turned around and went to the business across the street."

But Magers said, regardless of the reaction he gets, it's about accommodating his valued customers.

"You either allow it or you don't and if you don't they're forced pretty much to leave it in their car or not come to your business," said Magers.

Magers said there were many signs that had a much stronger political message that he chose not to purchase. But he is taking polls at each of his restaurants to see how customers are reacting.
