Pocahontas voters to consider tax for pool

Posted: Updated:

POCAHONTAS, Ark. (AP) - Voters in Pocahontas will decide next week on a sales tax increase to pay for a new aquatic center.

An election is set for Tuesday, when voters will consider two half-cent sales taxes for the proposal. The Jonesboro Sun reports (http://bit.ly/14vG3Ag ) that the first tax would pay for construction costs and end once the project is paid off. The second half-cent tax will be permanent.

Both taxes must pass for the project to move forward. City Clerk Suzanne Hawkins says it could take up to 12 years to pay for the estimated $6.5 million in construction costs.

The plan calls for an indoor, Olympic-sized pool with eight lanes and a therapeutic pool. The project also includes an outdoor pool with a slide and splash pad.
