Watchdog: IRS spent $4.1M on 2010 training conference

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A government watchdog says senior IRS officials enjoyed luxury hotel rooms, free drinks and free food at a $4.1 million training conference in 2010.

That's one of many expensive gatherings the agency held over a three-year period, including training videos produced by the IRS like a Star Trek spoof and another 16-minute long Gilligan's Island-themed video that cost $60,000.

The IRS said in a statement that the videos are an "unacceptable and inappropriate use of government funds. The IRS and the government as a whole now have strict policies and procedures in place to ensure that taxpayer funds are being used appropriately."
