4 insurance companies interested in Ark. exchange

Posted:

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Four insurance companies have told Arkansas officials they plan to participate in the marketplace that will be created under the federal health care law.

The Arkansas Insurance Department on Tuesday announced that the companies sent letters of intent to participate in the insurance exchange. The companies also submitted their planned service areas for 2014, which the department said it will review for adequacy.

The companies that submitted letters are Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield, National Blue Cross Blue Shield Multi-state Plan, Celtic (SEL'tic) Insurance Company/NovaSys Health and QualChoice of Arkansas.

About 500,000 Arkansas residents are expected to purchase insurance through the exchange, which will be run as a partnership between the state and federal government. Open enrollment for the exchange begins Oct. 1.
