Moore Tornado Update: 353 Injured, Death Toll Remains at 24

The Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s office says all but 1 of the 24 confirmed fatalities in Monday’s tornado have been identified.

In addition to the unidentified person, the medical examiner’s office have still not been able to notify next-of-kin for seven others.

The medical examiner’s staff worked around-the-clock to identify victims and document injuries.

According to Alex Weintz, communications director for Governor Fallin, all people that were thought missing have been accounted for at this time. 353 people were injured as a result of the tornado.

Most of the preliminary causes of death were listed as blunt force trauma. Five of the children’s cause of death was listed as “mechanical asphyxia.” The Medical Examiner’s office noted that mechanical asphyxia can refer to drowning, but in this case all the deaths were due to suffocation.

In all, 10 children were killed in Monday’s storm including two infants. Seven of the 10 children were students at Plaza Towers Elementary School.

Sydnee Vargyas, 4

Jenny Neely, 38

Antonia Canderaria, 9

Kyle Davis, 8

Janae Hornsby, 9

Sydney Angle, 9

Emily Conatzer, 9

Nicolas McCabe, 9

Cindy Plumley, age unknown

Deanna Ward, age unknown

Eight names were withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
